Yoga is never a simple exercise method to knock off those extra pounds off our bodies. It is not a bodybuilding course to build up strength, stamina, and will power. It is instead a helpful and gentle guide during the process to help us become more aware of ourselves and the world around us, and teaches us to appreciate life and all living things. The word Yoga means union; and regular practice of yoga helps to unite the body, mind, and spirit in one harmonious whole.

As we control our breathing and gently put our bodies to stretch, bend, twist, and work our muscles and organs, we begin to set loose the knotted binds of built-up tensions, the debris of unresolved emotions, in fact all that which are preventing us from attaining harmony. Yoga helps bring ourselves to a serene place of inner peace, in other words a wonderful state to be. In this calm state we are opening ourselves to healing and accept our instinctive wisdom and power.

Why yoga?

Well, there are other means of maintaining the body or feeding the soul, but there is nothing that is quite like Yoga. You do not require expensive equipment, or spend heavily from your pocket to practice yoga. It is a beautiful and simple way to practice yoga, once you have learned the asanas from a qualified and understanding master.

It is good to notice the growing interest in yoga, it is a response to our growing awareness of the importance of a disciplined, balanced system of exercise in maintaining health. As stress-related health problems become a growing concern for people everywhere, we tend to look for cut and dried or drastic medical solutions. In fact, Yoga is an effective method to relieve stress, become more relaxed and focused.

What makes yoga so special?

As we said earlier, Yoga unites the body, mind and spirit. It is a symbiotic union of postures, breath and focus. The practice of yoga is deeply meditative, promoting relaxation and inner peace. Yoga encourages you to focus on your breathing, your posture and your body awareness, which are all important elements for good health.

Another beneficial aspect of Yoga is that you practice at your own pace, respecting your body limitations and stopping when you feel pain. Yoga gently expands the flexibility of your body, and sets challenges for you to overcome if you feel like it. There is no force, no pain, no crashing or depression as is possible with other methods like weightlifting. Yoga is adaptable, it can be as gentle or as challenging as a person student desires.

What do you wear to a Yoga class?

Wear loose comfortable clothing or tights. Layers are a good idea to easily regulate your body temperature by adding or shedding a layer. This helps adjust to body activity. The idea is to do the yoga session at the same time each day and do it each day. If you take up yoga as a one day at a time activity, you will have more success.

The results will not be immediately visible to you, but they will be around you, in the glowing faces of your colleagues at work who compliment you on how well you look, the scale in the bathroom as the pounds fall off and your inner being, which gets lighter, happier and makes you feel complete and one with your maker.
