Can Yoga Treat Depression?

Yoga for depression

Yoga can treat depression. Those who practiced yoga for an hour showed a healthy boost in levels of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminnobutyric (GABA). Low brain levels of GABA are associated with anxiety and depression.

Brain scans of yoga practitioners showed a healthy boost in levels of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) immediately after a one-hour yoga session. Low brain levels of GABA are associated with anxiety and depression.

Yoga postures, controlled breathing and meditation may work together to help ease brains affected by anxiety or depression. Simple Yoga stretching along with deep Yogic breathing alleviates depression by increasing brain chemicals that contribute to a feel-good response which are endorphins, enkephalins and serotonin.
