One of the reasons for the growing popularity of yoga is that it has been proved effective by scientific research. Yoga has been proved to effectively treat and prevent specific health conditions and diseases. Read on to learn more about yoga research and some useful findings.

Yoga for Back Pain
Can yoga help back pain patients? In a research trial, 101 chronic back pain patients were taught viniyoga practice for 12 weeks. After this period, the patients showed improvement in their back function and yoga also relieved some symptoms of their back pain.

Yoga for Osteoarthritis (OA)
OA is a common condition in the US, because the baby boomer generation is aging. How good is yoga for OA? In a small yoga research study on 11 OA patients, eight weeks of Iyengar yoga was found to reduce their knee pain stiffness. For OA victims, yoga practice may need to be modified to include straps, blankets, blocks and props.

Yoga for Strength and Flexibility
To test the effectiveness of hatha yoga for increasing strength and flexibility, researchers studied 10 novices, who were given bi-weekly sessions of hatha yoga and breathing exercises for eight weeks. After this training, the respondents showed great improvement in flexibility, endurance and muscle strength.

Yoga for Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US. Can yoga help heart patients? A review of 70 research studies about yoga therapy reveals that yoga can improve blood pressure, lipid profiles and insulin resistance. Thus, yoga can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Yoga for Depression
Depressed people experience feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and guilt. Yoga research suggests that yoga can alleviate certain symptoms of depression and prevent it from worsening into suicidal tendencies or major depressive disorder.

Yoga for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects the colon and causes diarrhea, constipation, bloating, pressure and abdominal pain. How can yoga help IBS patients? Yoga research analyzed a small sample of IBS patients, who were given yoga practice twice a day for two months. After this period, there was decrease in anxiety and bowel symptoms.
