Essence of yoga

Yoga has its origins in the hoary history of India. It is believed that yoga was initiated by Lord Shiva. Sage Patanjali codified the various aspects and branches of yoga. Anyone belonging to any religion can practice yoga and gain physical and mental benefits. Read on to learn more information in this article about the essence of yoga.

Path to Bliss

Yoga gurus vouch that diligently treading the path of yoga can transform one’s state of mind from weirdness to bliss. Many people, especially in the West, believe that yoga is just a form of physical exercise. But, true yoga is beyond that. It can lead you to spiritual ecstasy and help realize your true self.

Yoga is a Science

The various yoga paths help us culture ourselves. It is veritably a science whose goal is to harmoniously develop the body, mind and soul. In fact, yoga literally means union”. A diligent yoga practitioner learns to control their mind and its vacillations.

Eight-Fold Yoga

The various branches of yoga include asanas (poses), pranayama (breathing methods), kriya (self-cleaning methods), bandha (body locks) and mudra (hand gestures). Patanjali further codified yoga into eight branches which can lead one to self-realization. These are:

  1. Yama: Ethical guidelines for social behavior
  2. Niyama: Ethical guidelines for personal behavior
  3. Asana: Yoga poses
  4. Pranayama: Breathing techniques
  5. Pratyahar: Sense withdrawal to facilitate meditation
  6. Dharana: Uninterrupted concentration
  7. Dhyana: Meditation
  8. Samadhi: Blissful state of mind
Essence of Yoga

Yoga experts believe a life force called kundalini lies coiled at the base of every human’s spine. Yoga exercises aim to elevate this life force to the top of the skull. While yoga asanas discipline the body and make it healthy, pranayama and meditation techniques help one to overcome the shenanigans of the monkey mind. Yoga’s ultimate goal is to help the practitioner transcend his normal self and reach enlightenment.

  1. Thanks for this; it’s a perfect introduction to the often confusing world of yoga, short enough to be palatable, inviting enough to be a beginning. So many of us are intrigued by what people claim of yoga, but intimidated by it’s confusing maelstrom of the ancient and modern, science and metaphysic, physical and spiritual.

I do a lot of writing on the ‘other parts’ of yoga – the stuff that isn’t just poses – on my site, including daily yoga meditations. Would love your feedback.

    Very Best,
