Kriya Yoga is a process to achieve mental purification through different meditative techniques. Kriya is made of two words “kri” and “ya”. KriĀ basically means any work and ya means the soul. Hence Kriya is the work done by the power of the indwelling soul.

Kriya yoga meditation techniques help in getting rid of the obstructions of the mind and the body. The various mantras and techniques involved in Kriya yoga meditation bring calmness and control both mind and body.
The goal of Kriya yoga is to gain pure awareness. The followers of Kriya yoga believe that the science of Kriya yoga is not created by humans and it has a divine origin.

In Kriya Yoga it is believed that the supreme creator of this Universe resides within the human body and through breath He activates every action. Our actions are controlled by the different cosmic forces which control air, water, fire and the earth. This means that everything which is done by us is controlled by some cosmic force.

On the other hand, Yoga is the means of union between the individual self and the supreme self. So, yoga joins microcosms and macrocosms.

Through Kriya yoga a disciple can penetrate to the deepest levels of the unconscious mind. This can be achieved by applying different techniques of Kriya yoga such as self introspection, proper breathing control, concentration, posture and enlightening the qualities of light, sound and vibration.

Technique in Practicing Kriya Yoga
Kriya yoga works directly with our source of growth, the spiritual energy present deep in our spine. Usually, all the yoga techniques work on this energy indirectly. For example, meditation is used to awaken this energy. Yoga postures are used to balance this energy in the spine. Kriya yoga is a direct technique and it teaches how to control the life force with willpower and total awareness. This is done by drawing the life forces up and down the spine.

Underlying Science of Kriya Yoga

  • It is a psycho-physiological method through which the human blood is recharged and de-carbonized using oxygen.
  • The extra oxygen is transmuted into life current that rejuvenates our spine and brain centers.
  • A yogi can lessen or prevent the decaying of tissues, by accumulation of venous blood.
  • An advanced yogi can transmute all his cells to pure energy.

The Path of Kriya Yoga
According to Pramahansa Yogananada there are four techniques which encompass the path of kriya yoga:

  1. Energization exercises
  2. A concentration technique called Hong-Sau
  3. Aum technique for meditation
  4. The kriya technique
