Stretching Exercises for Flexibility

Stretching is a very good idea when you’re through exercising and want to cool down. After your workout, stretching exercises for flexibility help your muscles remain flexible and allow your heart to slowly readjust to its normal beat.

Some stretching exercises for flexibility:

Shoulders, Upper Arms and Chest

  • Grab a rolled-up towel to help you with this stretch for the shoulders, upper arms and chest.
  • Start with your arms overhead, elbows straight, holding the towel in both hands.
  • Lower your left arm, allowing your right arm to slightly bend.
  • Slowly lower your right arm to the same level as your left.
  • Now move both arms downward as far as comfortable.
  • Hold this position for several seconds, then raise both your arms.

Upper Thigh and Hip
This stretch works primarily for the upper thigh and the hip.

  • Position both your hands on your knee, then press forward and downward. Hold for several seconds.
  • Twist your body and turn to the other side(no need to move the feet). Repeat on each side several times.
  • Do not allow the knee of your forward leg to get in front of the ankle. In other words, keep your shin perpendicular to the ground. This will allow for the greatest stretch of the back leg.

Back One of the most common and painful injuries among weekend warriors is pulled back muscles. Protect your back by stretching exercises for flexibility.

  • Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  • Next, hug your knees and slowly pull them up to your chest.
  • Hold for 10 seconds, then slowly return your feet to the floor, first the right, then the left.
  • To loosen up your stomach muscles, remain in the back stretch position and curl up your shoulder blades.
