Important Instructions of Spiritual Yoga (I)

Do you want to learn about the spiritual side of yoga? If you do, there are some instructions that you should follow in order to attain a true understanding about spiritual yoga. These instructions are given in two articles. You will find a total of 20 instructions which might be useful to enhance your progress on spiritual yoga.

Spiritual yoga focuses on spiritual purity and soul cleansing. Breathing exercises are the main part of your spiritual yoga exercises. Kindly remember to combine yoga breathing techniques with all of your yoga exercises. In relation to the purpose of this article, please find below about the first ten out of twenty important spiritual instructions of yoga (by H.H. Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj)

Instructions of Spiritual Yoga
  • Wake up before the sun rises at 4 a.m. every day. This is Brahmamuhurta. Brahmamuhurta is very advantageous to meditate.
  • Do yoga poses (Asanas). Sit yourself in Siddha, Padma or Sukha Asana for japa along with meditation for thirty minutes. Increase the period of your asanas steadily to 180 minutes. Add Sarvangasana and Sirshasana to keep up health and Brahmacharya. You should add light physical exercises, such as jogging or walking regularly. Add twenty Pranayamas too.
  • Repeat any yoga mantra (japa) according to your inclination or taste, starting from 108 to 21.600 times every day.
  • Perform dietetic discipline. You should take Suddha Ahara, sattvic food. Give up asafetida, mustard, oil, sour articles, onion, garlic, tamarind and chillies. Avoid over-eating and eat simple foods. Fruits and milk would help your concentration. Avoid sugar and salt for one month. Take food as a need to keep your life going instead of enjoyment.
  • It would be better for you to have a private meditation room.
  • Do charity regularly to the best of your ability.
  • Study systematically and regularly the Gita, the Bhagavata, the Ramayana, Lalita-sahasranama, Sri Vishnu-sahasranama, Yoga Vasishtha and Upanishads, Aditya Hridaya, the Quran, the Bible, Zend Avesta, the Granth Sahib, the Tripitakas, etc. It would be better for you to have pure thought (Suddha Vichara).
  • Preserve the Veerya (vital force) very carefully. Veerya is the spirit of life, intelligence and thought.
  • Acquire by your heart several prayer-Slokas and Stotras. Repeat Slokas and Stotras once you sit in Asana. This action will elevate your mind faster.
  • You should do group prayer (satsanga). Eliminate alcoholic beverages, meat, cigarettes and bad company entirely. Never develop negative or any evil behavior.
