Yoga Basic Pose: Split Pose

Do you know what split pose is? If you do, do you know how to exercise split pose? Split pose is considered as one of hardest poses for your hamstrings. You had better practice other yoga basic poses regularly before you perform this one.

Hanuman, the monkey god is the inspiration of this pose. In this pose, your body does two different things at one time, a back bend and a forward bend, illustrates HanumanĀ“s famous leap when he jumped from the southern tip of India to the land of Rahvana, the island of Sri Lanka.

“It was the greatest leap ever taken. The speed of Hanuman’s jump pulled blossoms and flowers into the air after him and they fell like little stars on the waving treetops. The animals on the beach had never seen such a thing; they cheered Hanuman, then the air burned from his passage, and red clouds flamed over the sky . . .” (Ramayana, retold by William Buck).

Through this pose, you will learn how to cope with contradiction. This is the main idea of yoga, knowing that there will always contradictories in every person, every moment and every event.

Exercise this pose with the above idea inside your mind to have a better result rather than trying to simply perform the pose physically.

Yoga Basic Pose – Split Pose (also known as Monkey Pose or Hanumanasana)

Here are the steps to perform split pose:

  • Spread a blanket on the floor. It would be better for you not to use stick mat. A bare floor will also be a good place to practice split pose
  • Begin yourself with basic lunge (runnerĀ“s lunge)
  • Shift your hips back until your front leg goes straight
  • Make your back leg bent
  • Shift yourself forward and back, in and out of your lunge and perform forward bend. Do it until the two actions feel match to each other
  • Slide your front leg and your back leg straight to your best ability
  • Maintain your muscular energy, keep both actions equal so that this pose becomes balanced and grounded
    Reverse your position
