Yoga Basic Pose: Handstand

How good is your asanas (yoga poses) now? Your routine exercise should have given you a healthier body and mind, especially if you practice them regularly.

Now, we will continue our lesson about yoga basic pose, handstand. Yes, this is handstand and not a headstand. This pose is a little bit difficult from the previous poses. Nevertheless, you should keep yourself better than before, right?

Believe in yourself if you can perform handstand in a good manner. If you think you can, you can. And if you think you cannot, you are right!

Handstand (also known as Adho Mukha Vriksasana)
Since handstand is more difficult than those of previous yoga basic poses, we will combine it with table pose and downward dog. You may read the explanations about how to perform table pose and downward dog pose to make you easier in understanding handstand pose.

Begin your handstand pose exercise with table pose. The steps to perform table pose are as follows:

  • Spread a blanket or yoga mat near the wall
  • Place both of your hands and knees on the mat/blanket
  • Take the knees hip width apart
  • Place your feet behind the knees
  • Bring your arms under the shoulder and be sure that your fingers facing forward
  • Look down and consent to your back to be flat
  • Press into the palms to drop the shoulder slightly away from your ears
  • Press your tail bone to the back wall
  • Make your top of the head to the front wall to lengthen your spine

Then, perform the following steps:

  • Shrug your shoulders up
  • Make sure to keep your arms stay strong and your shoulders on the back
  • Press up your pose into downward dog pose

The steps to perform downward dog pose are as follows:

  • Lean yourself back toward the heels
  • Press the hips and buttocks up and back
  • Straighten your legs

After downward dog pose, do the following steps:

  • Take a step forward
  • Continue with kick up your back leg
  • Squeeze in with your inner thighs
  • Extend your feet up into the air
