What is Ujjayi Pranayama Technique?

Ujjayi Pranayama is an important breathing technique among the 14 pranayama techniques practised. Many call it the ocean breath because, in this practice you contrast the glottis thereby, making an ocean sound while inhaling and exhaling. This is one technique that gives inner energy to master physical activities. And practicing yoga can also be helpful in growing muscular stamina.

Ujjayi Pranayama Technique

This breathing technique stretches and warms your breath before letting it to the lungs, this will heat up the body. There are three steps involved to complete the technique, they are puraka, kumbhaka and rechaka. This makes it unique and very good for a healthy life.

Puraka: A single inhalation is called puraka, in ujjayi process puraka is carried out regularly and simultaneously.

Kumbhakas:
It is a particular breathing process in which the suspension and retention of your breath is a key factor. The kumbhaka is classified as Antara Kumbhaka and Bhaya Kumbhaka.

Rechaka: It can be said as a typical form of pranayama that deals with relaxation of your chest. In rechaka the exhalation is lengthened.

Ujjayi Pranayama Steps

  • Be seated in a comfortable pose and keep your spine straight
  • Inhale slowly with both nostrils, make sure that inhalation should be in a way that the inhaled air should be experienced in your throat. This should make some sound
  • While inhaling, your abdomen must not expand, instead your chest needs to be expanded
  • Once a complete inhalation is done, now slowly exhale through both the nostrils. Here the chest should contract, but your abdomen should remain steady

Points to remember while performing Ujjayi Pranayama

  • Do not perform this action in a polluted area. Perform it in a garden where there are lots of trees.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. Do not wear tight and heavy clothes
