Having pain and slight swelling in your joints? Or Feeling stiffness on your back? Or Having pain while sitting or standing for long periods?, then you probably might be suffering with arthritis. In the United States, 45% of adults between 45 to 65 years and 70% of adults above 65 years age are suffering from arthritis. The government warns about increasing arthritis percentage among children and teenagers, this is mainly due to obesity and unhealthy living.
Why Yoga for Arthritis?
Yoga is not just a set of poses, it is the way of healthy living. Every aspect of life changes while you are in yoga practise. The most important feature of yoga is, it does not has any side effects and the problems will not appears as long as you follow the instruction carefully.

It includes
Asanas
- It is very important for arthritis patients to have some physical activity. It might feel hard but it helps a lot.
- Simple movements and poses increase blood circulation and relax the muscles.
- The poses like Tadagasana, Bhujangasana, Dwipadsahajhasta Bhujangasana, Ekpadsahajhasta, Pavanamuktasana (1 leg & 2 legs), Januhastasana, Makarasana, Swastikasana, Hastashirasana, Trikonasana, Vrikshasana and Veerasana are very helpful.
- However, the important point to remember is, the practise should be slow and the postures should not be held for more time.
- 20 minutes of practise everyday is very essential.
Pranayama
Usually simple pranayama (normal deep breathing) is recommended, but in a survey by American Yoga Association the pranayama with inhalation through one nostril and exhalation through both nostrils is said to have best results in many arthritis patients.
Diet
- Diet plays an important role in the practise of yoga and in curing arthritis.
- Having nutritious food is very important
- Vegetarian food is mostly preferred while practising yoga
- If that is not possible, then avoid deep fries and spices in your food
