Exercise and relaxation are as important to kids as are to adults. Children these days are stressed out due to pressure from their own little world around them, so that they don’t even get enough time for play. But many parents overlook the necessity of regular body movement and relaxation for their children, since they believe that children are by default active. This however is not the case. Kids should not only get physical exercise, but also mental relaxation. The yoga provides an excellent means of both to kids as to the elderly.

Benefits

Yoga for kids can benefit children in a large number of ways, by improving physical and general health, mental health and to helping to treat specific illnesses and conditions. The most common benefits of yoga for children are related to maintaining a healthy body and fighting illnesses. Children’s yoga may not be suitable for your child if it suffers from physical illnesses or physical defects.

Asanas

Not every type of yoga can be used as yoga for children though. It must be taken into consideration that children’s’ bodies are still growing and cannot cope with the strenuous exercises of intense yoga sessions as it can affect both their bodies and minds.

Here are a few simple but highly useful yoga postures specially recommended for children.

Palm tree pose or Tadasana:

Stand erect with feet joined together. Raise arms above the head and lock your fingers such that the palm is facing upwards. Raise the heels and stretch upwards as much as you can so that you feel the tension in arms, neck and shoulders.

Triangle pose or Trikonasana:

In this position, the left hand should be straight up and the head should be aligned to look up, too. Come back to the starting position and repeat on the other side. Initially, do it slowly for two to three times on either side.

Lotus pose or Padmasana:

Inhale and slowly raise the head and shoulders towards the knees such that the chin is between them. Exhale and come back to the sleeping position.
